Alexa von Tobel
Alexa von Tobel, CFP® is the Chief Innovation Officer of Northwestern Mutual. She founded LearnVest, which was acquired by Northwestern Mutual in 2015, with the goal of helping Americans make progress on their money. Since the acquisition, she has held leadership roles including Chief Digital Officer, where she helped to accelerate the company’s digital transformation. She is the company’s first Chief Innovation Officer responsible for Northwestern Mutual’s Future Ventures and for identifying strategies, business opportunities and new technologies transforming the financial industry.
Before launching LearnVest, she served as the Head of Business Development at Drop.io, a technology-focused start-up backed by RRE Ventures and DFJ Gotham Ventures, which was acquired by Facebook. She started her career at Morgan Stanley as a trader in their internal hedge fund group.
Alexa is a sought-after financial expert; she has been a featured speaker at conferences and events including SXSW Interactive, New York University’s Stern Entrepreneurs Exchange Summit and Fortune Summit: Most Powerful Women Entrepreneurs. And, has appeared on several national television programs and publications—The Today Show, Good Morning America, and CBS This Morning, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg Businessweek, among others, and has been featured on the cover of Forbes.
She has been included in Forbes Top 30 Under 30, selected as one of Fortune's Most Powerful Women and included in their 40 Under 40 list, named as one of the World Economic Forum's Young Global Leaders, listed on Inc. Magazine's 30 Under 30, noted as one of "18 Women Changing the World" by Marie Claire, and received a "Genius Award" from Elle.
Alexa is The New York Times bestselling author of Financially Fearless and the forthcoming book Financially Forward (2019). She is also a columnist for Inc. Magazine and Vogue. She is a member of the 2018 Class of Henry Crown Fellows and an inaugural member of the Presidential Ambassadors for Global Entrepreneurship, a first-of-its-kind collaboration between celebrated American entrepreneurs, the White House and government agencies, including the Department of Commerce and the U.S. Agency for International Development.
A Florida native, she received a bachelor’s degree with honors in psychology from Harvard College and attended Harvard Business School. She was awarded Magna Cum Laude Plus for Harvard's first ever senior thesis on Bhutan. Alexa is married to Cliff and has two children.
